5 New Artists, 5 Debut Albums

Before appearing on magazine covers, on the MySpace most listened to artists list, or on TV video channels, some artists are already making good music and seem to be the new stars in the big universe of new sounds. Flowmi has chosen 5 artists that have recently released their first album or are about to do so. Check them out!

Sam Sparro

A wonder boy moving up the ladder who combines the perfect doses of Jamie Lidell’s electronic soul sound with Robbie Williams’ sexy brit pop. He has already played with Mark Ronson and Jamie Reynolds at Coachella and has dared say that he doesn’t like Madonna’s latest video (though he has already apologized for that.) His first single “Black & Gold,” released in 2007, became an unquestionable radio hit, like “Crazy,” with a glamourous video. Sam Sparro (2008) is also the name of his debut album, a solid candidate to become the album of the year.

Coco Sumner

People say she is “the next Lily Allen or Kate Nash.” She’s only 17 and several labels are waging war to celebrate a contract to record the debut album of her band I Blame Coco, to be released in 2009. She’s a friend of Pixie Geldof and Pete Doherty, although her father, Sting, is not precisely happy for that. She has inherited her dad’s voice (particular and… masculine?) and collection of reggae, ska and dub vinyls that marked the rhythm of England.

Syclops

Sven Kortehisto, Hanna Sarkari and Jukka Kantonen don’t play at live shows and don’t give interviews. However, this mysterious trio produced by Maurice Fulton is one of the latest incorporation of DFA. Their debut album I’ve Got My Eye On You (2008) combines nu-jazz with acid house and analog synths from old skool, like the soundtrack of a breakdance videogame. Subtle and dark intensity.

Codebreaker

Steven Hawley (vocals and keyboards) and Sage Schwarm (bass) form this duo of lively melody builders based on post-disco, funk and 80’s house era. Their danceable, eclectic and exotic debut album Exiled! (2007) exudes good taste and has harvested good criticism: “The sound recalls some crazy house party where Cameo is drinking with Prince, Phoenix is partying with Daft Punk and Bootsy Collins is jamming on the sofa,” stated the Washington Post. They have shared the stage with Hot Chip, Datarock, Chromeo and Yelle, among many others. An absolutely contemporary sound.

Stereo Image

Nat Rabb is San Serac, an disco-soul artist related to The Rapture, LCD Soundsystem, Blackstrobe, Chromeo and Junior Boys, with whom he went on tour during 2007. Together with Johnny Dark, separated from his band, they created the duo Stereo Image. Their album S/T -to be released in September- is a combination of Junior Boys’ stylized elegance with placid grooves, 2-steps garage beats and occasional interruptions of San Serac’s dramatic voice in the vocoder.
